The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) exam pattern for classes 1–5 is as follows:
Grading: The grading system for classes 1–5 emphasizes formative assessment and continuous feedback. Students receive detailed feedback reports from their teachers on their progress and areas for improvement. The overall results are given in grades on a 5-point scale.
Exams: The number of papers, duration of examination, and marks for each subject are specified in the curriculum for the year. Examinations are conducted in theory and practical's, depending on the nature of the subject.
Periodic tests: Periodic tests are worth 40 marks and are one hour thirty minutes long.
Mid-term and annual exams: Mid-term and annual exams are worth 80 marks each and are three hours long.
The CBSE curriculum is made up of five learning areas: language, social science, mathematics and technology, science, and physical education, performing arts, and visual arts.
For students in classes' I-V, the school offers English as the first language, Tamil as the second language and Hindi as third language. In addition, students study Mathematics, Environmental Science.
The CBSE has updated the examination pattern for classes 6 to 8 to align with Competency-Focused Education principles. The new pattern includes:
Two terms The academic year is divided into two terms, with exams at the end of each term.
Four exams There are four exams in a year: Internal Assessment 1 and Half Yearly Exam in Term 1, and Internal Assessment 2 and Annual Exam in Term 2. .
Competency-focused questions 50% of questions are competency-focused, including MCQs, case-based questions, and source-based integrated questions.
Constructed response questions 30% of questions are constructed response questions, including short and long answer questions.
The new pattern also includes a uniform assessment system across classes 6 to 8.
For students in classes VI-VIII, English remains the first language, Tamil is the second language, and they have the option to choose between Hindi / Sanskrit as the third language. The curriculum for these classes includes Mathematics, Science, and Social Science.
The CBSE exams are structured to assess both theoretical understanding and practical application. Each subject follows a specific format, typically combining objective and subjective questions. The question papers are divided into sections to include multiple-choice questions (MCQs), short answer, and long answer types, giving students a well-rounded assessment.
Mathematics Chapters on Algebra, Trigonometry, and Geometry carry a significant portion of the marks, making them crucial for exam preparation.
Science Focus areas include Physics topics such as Light and Electricity, Chemistry chapters on Carbon and its Compounds, and Biology sections covering Life Processes and Control and Coordination.
Social Science: History, Geography, Political Science, and Economics are weighted differently; students should prioritise topics based on the allocated marks.
Internal Assessments and Practical Examinations CBSE also includes internal assessments in each subject, contributing to the final grade. These include periodic tests, notebook submissions, and subject enrichment activities such as lab work or project presentations. The internal assessment usually accounts for 20 marks, while the main exam paper is set for 80 marks.
MCQs or select response type questions will comprise 20% of the total marks. This type of questions has been included to encourage critical thinking and quick decision-making skills among students.
